positive affirmations that won’t make you roll your eyes

How do you feel about positive affirmations? Do you embrace them as a powerful tool for personal growth or do you view them as far-fetched and a tad ridiculous?

I happen to love positive affirmations! I use them regularly as a way to grow my mindset, challenge ingrained limiting beliefs, and build my confidence. But I also understand the criticism I hear from many people. I’ve seen plenty of silly, unbelievable, and at times, even damaging statements touted as aspirational. So if you’re skeptical, believe me, I get it!

Oftentimes affirmations are worded in ways that seem completely unrealistic to the person using them. For example, “I am a bold and confident businesswoman” will probably not resonate with someone who has recently been laid off and is struggling to find a new job. Likewise, “I am a disciplined and committed athlete” isn’t going to fly for someone who hasn’t exercised in months. If we’re reading and reciting affirmations that don’t feel true to us at all, there’s no way they’re going to become part of a sustainable practice.

So what’s the solution?

The trick is to choose positive affirmations that won’t make you roll your eyes! Statements that encourage and direct you to embrace challenge and growth, while supporting you where you are at right now.

I want to share ten positive affirmations that I use regularly and that I have found to be very powerful.

positive affirmations to enhance your personal growth and mindset

  1. I choose to view each failure, letdown, and disappointment as an opportunity to practice my skills and develop resilience.

  2. I am planting seeds of confidence. Growing and blooming takes time.

  3. I develop strength and determination through the challenges I face.

  4. I am allowed to make mistakes, learn from them, and grow.

  5. I am thankful for the compassion and empathy I’ve gained through the difficult times I’ve gone through.

  6. I am building a growth mindset every time I step outside of my comfort zone.

  7. Each time I face a challenge, I practice treating myself with kindness and compassion.

  8. Every time I engage in a new experience, I am creating opportunities for myself.

  9. Whenever I notice beautiful details in my life, I express gratitude and appreciation.

  10. I am empowering myself through my commitment to personal growth and development.

Notice that each of these affirmations highlights a choice that is being made. We are choosing to view circumstances as opportunities for growth. We are planting, developing, building, and empowering ourselves through our actions. We also acknowledge that mistakes and setbacks will happen and that growth takes time. This provides an element of compassion and kindness as we avoid dwelling on feelings of regret and shame.

How to incorporate positive affirmations in your life

  1. Write your affirmations down

First, take the time to write your affirmations down. By all means, feel free to use the ones I’ve included here. But also consider coming up with your own. If you have a specific challenge you’re currently facing, or a skillset you’re trying to develop, come up with some affirmations that will encourage and challenge you, while also feeling realistic.

  2. Say your affirmations out loud

After writing your affirmations down, say them out loud. You might want to record yourself reciting your affirmations. I do this and then I listen to them while I’m on my morning walk, before I listen to a podcast. There’s something powerful about hearing yourself speaking empowering words out loud. I highly recommend it!

  3. Use your affirmations daily

Like most things in life, consistency is key! The best way to ensure that your affirmations are working for you is to use them daily! I find it helpful to incorporate them at the same time every day so that it becomes a habit. Think about a realistic and convenient time for you to read, speak, and/or listen to your affirmations. Maybe like me, it’s on your morning walk. Or you might prefer doing it as you wait for your morning coffee to brew or perhaps during your lunch break or as part of your evening routine. Incorporating your affirmations daily is key!
